It was also used in the War as part of the treatment for shell shock. Valerian is an excellent sedative.

Therapeutic Indications:
Stress is part of our everyday lives, particularly in the hectic society we inhabit. Valerian root helps our bodies adjust to these continual demands. This plant’s active compounds, known as valepotriates, make Valerian a very helpful nervine (nerve relaxant). It may be used safely to alleviate tension, over excitability, hysteria, and feelings of anxiety. Valerian is considered a very powerful treatment for people suffering from insomnia, since it produces natural rejuvenating sleep. This pungent herbal may prove to be the ideal sedative, as it does not interfere with thought processes or hamper the performance of complicated tasks.
As an antispasmodic herbal remedy, Valerian aids treatment of stomach cramps, intestinal colic, and is also useful for the cramps and discomfort of periods. As a pain reliever it is most effective for tension associated with pain. Valerian can help with many people’s migraines and headaches. In addition to being relaxing on the Central Nervous System, Valerian is a potent anti-diuretic and anti-bacterial.
Clinical studies have confirmed Valerian’s sedative properties, leading to this plant’s inclusion in multiple pharmacopoeias (the bibles of the medical industry). Valerian’s medicinal components relax tense nerves and allow us to cope with stress.
