North American Indians used echinacea for infections and animal bites. A member of the Compositae (daisy) family, Echinacea angustifolia, is recognized as an herbal remedy for immune system strengthening. In fact, this pretty plant was included in the pharmacopoeias of medical establishments all over North America earlier this century.

The most popular herb in North America, echinacea is used in a multitude of pharmaceutical and natural remedies. This purple-flowering herb can be used to successfully treat respiratory infections, symptoms of colds and flu, and yeast infections caused by Candida albicans. A variety of constituents within echinacea are believed to be responsible for its characteristic medicinal qualities. In addition, clinical studies have proven echinacea helps lessen the time required by the body to recover from colds and flu.

Echinacea can also be applied topically to heal wounds, cuts, and burns, and treat conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and herpes simplex.

Echinacea is recognized as “the immune herb”. It works to help the body combat and ultimately defeat various bacterial, fungal, viral and protozoan infections. Symptoms normally associated with these types of infections are decreased in severity with use of this herb.

Elder (Sambucus nigra)

Elder has been used for centuries in North America and Europe as a food, particularly in the dried form. Elderberry wine, pie, and lemonade are some of the popular ways to prepare this plant as food. Native American herbalists used the plant for infections, coughs, and skin conditions.

Elder is rich in antioxidant flavonoids, including quercetin and anthocyanins. These flavonoids are believed to account for the therapeutic actions of the elder. These flavonoids are powerful antioxidants and protect cells against damage in scientific studies. Studies show that elder can inhibit the influenza (flu) virus, speeding up recovery from infection.


Garlic (Allium sativum)

Garlic has been used since recorded time as a culinary spice and medicinal herb. It is mentioned in the Bible and the Talmud. Hippocrates, Galen, Pliny the Elder, and Dioscorides all mention the use of garlic for many conditions. Garlic has been cultivated in the Middle East for more than 5,000 years and has been an important part of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Studies have looked at garlic’s potential for fighting infection and detoxifying the body. The active components allicin and alliin are effective against bacteria and fungi. Helicobacter pylori, the bacteria responsible for many peptic ulcers, is one species of bacteria that garlic has been shown to inhibit. Garlic may also help in the detoxification of heavy metals from the body, including lead.

People often use goldenseal as an immune system enhancer, infection fighter, natural anti-biotic, and general health tonic. However, many feel this unique plant can help with any problem.

As a bitter, goldenseal is one of the best remedies for stomach problems. It aids in problematic digestion by stimulating bile production. Goldenseal’s ability to control spasms has made it a potent treatment for menstrual pain.

Olive Oil (Extra Virgin) (Olea europaea)

Extra virgin olive oil has been used for centuries as both food and medicine. It is one of the staples of the Mediterranean diet due to its many nutritive and health benefits.

Extra virgin olive oil is rich in health promoting and protecting compounds. It is high in vitamins E and K, both of which protect the body from disease. It is a good source of both omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids which help to strengthen cell membranes.

Research also is showing that extra virgin olive oil is rich in polyphenols and phytosterols. These phytochemicals are potent antioxidants. It is thought that consumption may contribute to the lower incidence of heart disease and cancer seen in the Mediterranean region.

Researchers suspect that these antioxidant polyphenols are responsible for a reduction of blood pressure in high blood pressure patients. A study published in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine reports concluded that people on high blood pressure medications may be able to reduce the amount of medicine they take if they substitute extra-virgin olive oil for other types of fats in their diet.

Onion (Allium cepa)

Onion has been used as food for many centuries. Onion was a popular folk remedy, being applied to tumors, made into a syrup for relieving coughs, or used to relieve “dropsy” (heart failure – related edema). Onion is considered a valuable health tonic since it is rich in vitamins, including B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), and C.

Two sets of compounds make up the majority of onion’s known active constituents – sulfur compounds, such as allyl propyl disulphide (APDS), and flavonoids, such as quercetin.

Onion’s sulfur compounds have been repeatedly shown to kill various bacteria, viruses and pathogens. The sulfur compounds have also been shown to be anti-inflammatory. APDS has been shown to block the breakdown of insulin by the liver and possibly to stimulate insulin production by the pancreas, thus increasing the amount of insulin and reducing sugar levels in the blood. This could prove valuable to diabetics. Onion is exceedingly safe as it does not reduce blood sugar levels in healthy non-diabetic individuals.
